How Osteoarthritis Develops
As one of the most common joint conditions, osteoarthritis affects more than 2.1 million Australians. While often thought of as something that only develops with age, the reality is that osteoarthritis can begin much earlier in life, even in young people. Spinal disc changes, for example, have been found in children as young as ten.
Why Joint Alignment Matters
For our joints to stay healthy, they need to line up properly and move through their full range of motion. When alignment is altered, whether through posture issues, bumps, falls, or repetitive lifting and twisting, cartilage can wear down more quickly. This process often begins quietly, without obvious symptoms, and gradually impacts mobility, comfort, and quality of life.
Osteoarthritis is more than “wear and tear” of cartilage. It involves the entire joint, including muscles, ligaments, capsules, and nerves. Once this cycle of breakdown begins, it can continue to progress unless steps are taken to address it.
What You Can Do
The good news is that there are ways to reduce the impact of osteoarthritis and help your joints function better. Practical supports, posture tips, and gentle exercises can slow the progression and make daily activities more manageable. Nutritional factors can also play a role in supporting joint health.
Chiropractic care may be helpful by improving posture, restoring mobility, and reducing muscle tension. Ideally, prevention begins earlier in life, when good alignment and healthy movement patterns can protect the joints long-term.
Taking Care of Your Joints
If you’re living with osteoarthritis, or if you want to take steps to prevent it, the key is to focus on maintaining alignment, encouraging movement, and supporting your body’s natural ability to function well. Small, consistent actions can make a meaningful difference in how you feel each day.
